Have you ever wondered what makes your dad tick? Do you sometimes
speculate about his thoughts, feelings, dreams, and experiences? My book,
UnderstandingDad, will help you get insight into such areas. It allows
you to become a journalist. An impartial interviewer. A historian.
UnderstandingDad is a vehicle designed to help you move closer to your
father while creating a legacy for you and your family. This unusual
workbook has 130 valuable questions, each on its own lined page, that
provide the foundation for your journey into the heart and mind of your
father. They aren’t confrontational questions, but are designed
to surprise, delight, and inform.
If I decide to interview Dad, will he and I forge a stronger relationship?
Probably. But UnderstandingDad is not intended to resolve or address
the deep-seated problems some of us may have with our dads. I’m
not a psychotherapist. I didn’t write this to create a forum for
figuring out why some fathers are abusive, too often absent, domineering,
aloof, or otherwise psychologically unhealthy. Regardless of our fathers’ dispositions
or psyches, most adult children want to learn more about them—their
likes, dislikes and experiences.
When I interview Dad, will I know most of the answers before I ask?
You may think you know the answers to the questions you’ll ask
your father, but most of the time, you may not. However, by learning
the answers to the questions posed in UnderstandingDad, new treasures
will spill into your knowledge bank. The two of you may end up communicating
more often as a result of going through this healthy, interesting process.
And you may build a stronger relationship.
Do you know the answers to the following questions about your
dad?
What is your father’s favorite color?
Who was your father’s best friend during his school years?
Why?
Can you describe his first car and what it meant to him?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions, why not just
ask your father? For many reasons, most of us never did (or could) ask
such questions. But, now you can do something about it. UnderstandingDad
gives you the foundation and organization you need to get more information
from your dad.
I wrote UnderstandingDad for you. I designed it to help you capture
significant information from your dad. It worked for me, and it will
for you.
Is your father critically ill?
I was almost too late. Why not use this tough time that surrounds your
dad to get to know him better? It made a huge difference in my life.
And if your father is dealing with a major illness or condition, consider
this quote from Albert Einstein: “In the middle of difficulty lies
opportunity.” It is never too late. Until it is.
